FMCSA Motus Registration System: What Carriers Need to Know

Motus is FMCSA’s modern USDOT registration system for managing registrations, company accounts, filings, and authorized access. It is not a vehicle-tracking system.

What Motus Is

Motus is the U.S. Department of Transportation’s modern registration system for FMCSA customers. FMCSA describes it as a secure, mobile-friendly platform for the registration lifecycle, including company accounts, applications, filings, updates, and authorized user access.

The name Motus is not an acronym for a vehicle-tracking program. It comes from a Latin word associated with movement or progress. Earlier descriptions that called it a “Motor Carrier Unified Tracking System” were incorrect.

What Motus Replaces

FMCSA is using Motus to modernize and replace older registration functions associated with the Unified Registration System, parts of the Motor Carrier Management Information System, and legacy licensing-and-insurance registration tools. The transition has been introduced in phases, beginning with supporting companies and expanding to regulated entities.

What Carriers and Brokers Can Do

Users can create personal profiles, complete identity verification, establish or connect to company accounts, manage authorized access, submit registration filings, and maintain company information. The exact options available depend on the user’s role and the registration action being performed.

What Motus Does Not Mean

Motus is not described by FMCSA as a system requiring carriers to stream vehicle location, maintenance records, driver logs, or other real-time fleet data. It should not be confused with an ELD, telematics platform, safety-monitoring service, or load board.

Preparing to Use Motus

Use the official Motus website and FMCSA registration resources rather than links from unsolicited messages. Have accurate legal-business information available, complete identity and business verification carefully, and review which individuals or service providers are authorized to access the company account.

Security and Fraud Prevention

FMCSA identifies fraud prevention and stronger verification as major goals of the new system. Company owners should periodically review authorized users, protect login credentials, and confirm registration changes through official records.

Stay With Official Guidance

Registration procedures and transition dates can change. Check FMCSA’s current Motus resources before starting a filing or relying on older instructions. This article is general educational information and is not legal or regulatory advice.
